The Classroom with History

Nestled within the Design Innovation Institute of Shanghai in Hongkou District, a repurposed 1934 architectural hybrid once known as the Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education, a unique initiative unfolds every Sunday afternoon. The vintage classroom, with its high ceilings and cross-cultural design legacy, now hosts a six-week Mandarin crash course for expats.

Perfect for Beginners

"20-year Shanghai resident" Stephen Rancourt jokes that the lessons might not challenge his intermediate Mandarin, but he joins the inaugural session out of curiosity. The course covers phrases on food, shopping, transportation, travel, hobbies and sports.

More Than Just Language

Muhammad Ajmal from Pakistan highlights an unexpected perk: cultural nuance training. "How to act properly in China," he grins, "that's as valuable as the words themselves." Algerian participant Latifa agrees, praising the fusion of language and tradition.

The program's secret weapon? Hands-on cultural workshops. Stephen admits to missing the sachet-making session but redeems himself by crafting a Hetian jade snake-shaped necklace —a nod to the Year of the Snake under instructor guidance. "My first DIY jewelry," he laughs, clutching his certificate of completion.

The District's Vision

Sheng Ming from Hongkou's Talent Work Bureau reveals the bigger picture. "With Shanghai International Studies University as our anchor, we designed this as a gateway," she explains. Pilot success could lead to deeper dives tailored for the city's foreign professionals.
